Charles Ross is a well known garden and exhibition variety. As well as being a very attractive apple, it has also proven hardy in the Northern areas. Fruit is greenish-yellow and has an orange-red flush with distinct, broken bright red stripes. A sweet, juicy flavour and a creamy white flesh. Delicious when it's picked and eaten straight from the tree or pressed into home-made apple juices. Also bakes very well, keeping it's shape and flavour. Widely available across the UK and very easy to grow!

History

Raised by Charles Ross at Welford Park Gardens, Newbury, Berkshire, England. First exhibited in 1980 as 'Thomas Andrew Knight' and was renamed in 1899 by nurseryman William Pope. Thereafter considered a promising apple for commercial cultivation. Grown for markets in the 1930s and still remains very popular in Scotland. Received an Award of Garden Merit and First Class Certificate from the Royal Horticultural Society in 1899.
