Plant Area Manager

Person specification:

  • Minimum of 3 years practical Garden Centre plant area management experience
  • A degree or qualification in horticulture
  • Good knowledge of plants and garden centre retail products
  • Ability to manage, motivate and lead a plant team
  • I.T. literate with experience of using EPOS/retail systems and Microsoft office products would be an advantage, although not essential
  • Flexible approach to duties undertaken with an ability to manage change
  • Effective communication and organisational skills
  • Honesty and a high level of integrity
  • Enthusiasm and capacity for hard work
  • Clean driving licence
  • Non Smoker
  • Systematic and cheerful approach with a ‘can do’ attitude

Hours of work:

  • Full time, alternate weekends with one week day off each week.

Reports to:

  • Garden Centre Manager and the Owner

Main Objectives:

  • To assist the Garden Centre Manager in the day-to-day operations of Sussex Country Gardener in order to maximize profitable sales.
  • To manage the Plant Area for the Garden Centre whilst still reflecting the quality plant product and reputation the Garden Centre maintains
  • Stock Control based on seasonal forecasts with daily management of existing stock, slow sellers, specifically price amendments, discounting and wastage costs
  • To improve and achieve exceptional standards in the Garden Centre in terms of product, presentation and customer service
  • To maintain the highest standards of Health & Safety at all times

Duties and responsibilities


  • To be responsible for attaining all financial targets, in particular sales, gross margin, shrinkage, stock turn in the plant area
  • To be responsible for plant ordering with sign off by Management
  • To ensure all stock is bar-coded and ready for stock takes
  • Regular stock takes

People & communication

  • Ensuring all plant area staff are working efficiently and in a well-managed rota so customers always have a point of contact in the plant area,
  • Train staff to water, weed, prune, feed, dead head correctly and pass on plant knowledge to junior staff,
  • Meet and greet customers, first point of contact in the Centre,
  • Ensure all staff are aware of the high personal standards of performance and appearance at all times

Daily Site Operation

  • To ensure the plant area is neat, swept and faced up before opening, in the middle of the day and at closing
  • Ensure all signage and promotional and header cards are relevant and accurate
  • Arrange and display stock for promotion and sales
  • Watching for and recognizing security risk and thefts and when necessary report to management
  • To be responsible for the Health and Safety management of the plant area, ensuring appropriate responses to any maintenance needs, reporting to management where necessary.


  • Provide appropriate advice and guidance to both customers and staff on queries regarding plants
  • Ensure all plants are cared for adequately and wastage is minimal
  • Ensure all plants are protected from adverse weather conditions
  • Regular checks to the irrigation system
  • Inform staff of deliveries and placement of stock for display
  • To coordinate and work closely with external nurseries who supply the Garden Centre in quality of stock and ‘best price’ practice
  • To coordinate the overall buying strategy for the Garden Centre, ensuring awareness of current market trends.
  • Monitor and maintain cleaning operations to tables, floors, shelves, plant beds and other display equipment


  • To liaise with the marketing department with regard to advertising and promotion programmes and PR


  • To perform any other duties and objectives as required to contribute effectively to the achievement of the business aims and objectives.
