Winter Vegetables

It seems odd to be talking about winter vegetables in the summer, but July to August are the main months to be sowing your prospective crops for the winter months. Most are of the leafy variety, as particularly heavy wet soils are not suitable for over wintering root vegetables.

Some of the crops in the list below will give sweeter leaves if you move them indoors to the cold green house later in the summer, when you clear out the tomatoes. You can even recycle those growbags for a second crop with quick growing crops like Mizuna, Lambs Lettuce and Salad Rocket.

Swiss Chard is a great colourful leafy vegetable. It can come in a range of colours and can truly brighten up the cottage garden border when mixed in with those perennials in true cottager style. The leaves can be eaten like spinach and the stems steamed and served as a normal vegetable.
